The desktop version of Opera

The desktop version of Opera is very robust and full-featured, with none of the limitations of the Wii version. Whatever Nintendo's reason for not supporting newer versions of Flash may be, it is not because Opera is incapable of doing so. Switching to a different browser is a possibility, but not for the reasons cited.

Furthermore, Nintendo and Opera have a business arrangement. I don't know all of the details, but a a mutually beneficial arrangement with a for-profit corporation (that currently works very well) is likely to be better for Nintendo than entrusting their default browser to an open source project -- no offense to Firefox intended.

Nintendo Wii ditches Opera internet browser for Firefox

Judgment on September 2, 2008: The rumors were false -Firefox does not appear to be coming to the Wii any time soon. Judged at 0%. -- The Industry Standard

Original prediction: The Opera internet browser that comes with the Nintendo Wii is sub-par using Flash 7 which prevents the user from accessing many sites and viewing a lot of content. Nintendo must do a better job to capitalize on the Wii's success as both a game platform and an internet appliance by beefing up the Wii's browser with Mozilla Firefox.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This is a prediction that Firefox will become the primary and default browser for the Wii. It may still be possible to run Opera on the Wii in order for this prediction to be judged favorably. We will not intrepret "ditches" to mean that Opera will no longer be operable an or available for the Wii.
