Carly Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard, has been a high-profile supporter of John McCain's presidential campaign in the run-up to the 2008 election.
As a result, there has been speculation that she may soon be tapped for the VP slot on the McCain ticket. If true, this would be an incredibly interesting strategic move.
For starters, Fiorina’s impressive leadership credentials in Silicon Valley and the business community at large would quickly prop up a perceived McCain shortcoming, i.e. his “self-admitted weak grasp of economics” – not to mention his lack of technology expertise.
Secondly, having a prominent and well-respected woman on the ticket would serve to rebuff the “newness” and calls for change that the Obama campaign offers. Like Obama, she is a Washington outsider; she lacks a deep political track record, thus leaving less to be scrutinized by the mainstream media.
On Meet the Press a few weeks ago, Fiorina dodged the VP question, but the Financial Times' piece today finally confirms her interest, and is especially interesting given the left-leaning Silicon Valley's established preference for Obama whose tech policies have for the most part been met with applause. Fiorina would bring strong tech and business savvy to a ticket that could use a little of both.
This is a prediction that John McCain will select Carly Fiorina as his running mate in the general election in November. Let the community decide. Place your bets!

Fiorina has been widely recognized among HP employees as a tremendous negative as their former CEO. She's all style and no substance... which doesn't keep me from thinking she's kinda hot. ;)
She has been widely recognized as a CEO who made workers unhappy by not coddling them into thinking that their failing methods would continue to prop up a dying company. Instead she made the difficult decisions to cut jobs and make mergers that eventually turned the company into the leader in computer sales.
Fiorina was the official McCain surrogate on MTP again this Sunday. She went head-to-head against Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO), supposedly someone on the short-list for Obama. At the end of the interview/debate, the inevitable question was posed:
Do you actually believe that supervising an economic funeral is qualifies her for VP
Do you believe Reagans legacy is still strong too. Our trade policies are a joke, our national security is a joke, and we are deeply mortgaged to Communist china.
Do you believe that Americans can invest and create successful companies as long as we have FAIR trade. If not i would question your patriotism.
Just exactly what will it take for people like you to recognize that supply side economics have failed, that patriotism doesnt mean supporting a war based on lies, and that if we contiue with the policies the deceive and theive conserveatives our nations future is very very limited.
I am 75 years old and I can't think of two more unqualified candidates for president of the U.S.A. It's like Two Jimmie Carter's with their brains knocked out running against each other. For more than 75 years
we have fought against the "ISMS" of Socialism, Communism and fascism. We paid in blood and treasure. Come Nov. 4th, we'll go to the polls and the sixties generation and others will exercise their collective "willful ignorance" and vote for either a radical socialist or a social democrat, of benevolent stupidity, who would apologize for everything from our immigration laws to the homeliness of whistle's mother. The latter I credit for his military service but as a presidential candidate, he and the radical socialist have all the constitutional vision of MR. MAGOO. I can only say, wistfully, a leader, a leader, my kingdom for a leader. The catastrophe that is sure to follow; no matter who is elected, may result in a leader surviving from the ashes and, I believe, is the best we may hope. In the meantime, I'll probably stay home on Nov. 4th and leave the country to the tender mercies of the special interests who will have bribed us to vote the most complacent, arrogant and corrupt government money can buy!
I wish McCain would show this kind of guts and pick Carly Fiorina as VP. She'd get more Clintonistas than any other candidate. In fact, I would feel better with Carly in charge than with McCain himself, she's so good! She is far smarter than any politician I've seen on the stump, and she speaks personably with honesty. She could end up like Margaret Thatcher and save conservatism in America.
Fiorina is not qualified or competent to run this country. To reiterate Truman's comments, Fiorina is all style and no substance. Big mistake for McCain to consider Fiorina as VP running mate to be the first person in the presidential line of succession should he take office. It's foolish and pathetically transparent.
It would stun me if McCain chose Fiorina! Her performance as CEO at HP would expose her to a deluge of negative media attention. Add that to her lack of political credentials and total dearth of foreign policy experience and you have the definition of an albatross around McCain's neck. Consequently, I hope she's chosen. Obama could select a convicted felon as his running mate, and win!
I beg to differ with those of you who state that Carly Fiorina's tenure as CEO at HP was a failure. The strategy she created is still in place and providing the direction for the company - just with Mark Hurd's operational expertise driving its current success. She is tremendously bright and capable and would probably be fantastic in a political role - and would provide a perspective that's lacking in the McCain camp.

Obama is a "Washington Outsider"?? Are you f***ing kidding me?? He's a US Senator!! It doesn't get anymore inside than that!!
Mr Whelan, Your perspective of 75 years grants you more clarity than the mainstream of voters. I applaud your boldness in your sure-to- be accurate discription of impending doom comming from the vote pending for leadership of our once great country. God help us as we turn our backs on Him and His principals of goodness and humility. The day of the gentile leadership (white guys and their arrogant power) is truely over. All things change.
That's funny!

I am a Ugandan by nationality and i live in Kampala. Am 21years old and i have been following American politics since 1998. I think John McCain is going to win the Presidency and the fact that he has chosen a lady to be his running mate is fantastic.
Obama has no record and i believe McCain has USA at heart and this is evident during the Vietnam war where he even became a war prisoner. it is time for him to lead the Americans to prosperity and i think he will make it. It is a matter of time and having people who can read the game, he needs to rally many blacks behind him, the conservatives and liberals.
I wish i was in his campaign team?
God bless America
To most of the above comments -----YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID!!!!!!!!! Most of the voters in the USA fall in the stupid category.
Is this the same Carly whose polticially adept manipulations without regard to the legacy or heritage of HP turned them into another pandering multinational piece of shit that gave foreign nations the lead in almost every aspect of technology that had once been the near exclusive domain of HP and other American firms?
Someone who knows more about maintaining or inflating her worth and short term returns than about making real or lasting value and who thinks "honor" is a term reserved for fools in order to make them
easier to manipulate with lies and vague statements?
IF the USA were a corporation we were trying to do mergers and aquistions games with, or sell off to the highest bidder, Carly would be a great choice.
Seems to me, we have already had enough generations of politicians selling us off to the benefit of OTHER nations and special interests, rather than the future of our nation and its citizens.
Just say NO to Carly.
Not about her being female, about her demonstrated methods and values.
Time to say "enough is enough".
What we need is another Teddy Roosvelt ... any volunteers?
Great choice.
Enough said.
Perhaps we need to ask McCain to choose a black x-General as his running mate, can anyone think of one?
Dah ... or maybe Schwartzkopf ... then we can get someone who has the guts to end the war in the mideast, if necessary by nuking them, force is a value they understand ...
And what is this dumb bleeding heart liberal idea we got in our heads that if we bleed for land, we should give it back to olthers?
Me, I think if they make us come there to defend ourselves from them, we ought to kill everything, present down to cockroaches and take over the land permamently as ours.
We bled for it, we paid for it, we ought to own it.
If we establish that as a policy, very few folks will want to attack us in any way.
Right now, having a war with us is a great way to get rideof your internal competition in a nation, and get nearly unlimited free aid from the USA to rebuild.
How dumb are we?
'
I want to vote for the first candidate who wants to have the US show some backbone for a change.
Sadly, there are none.
Right on Stella! If Carly hadn't engineered the strategic moves she did at HP (i.e. acquiring Compaq), I think HP would be an also-ran rather than a leader.
Dear Ritchie<
The most complacent, arrogant and corrupt government money can buy is the one currently in office.
Your writing about leaving the country is the smartest part. Adios
