Muni Wi-Fi hype has come and gone. News of pending shutdowns of muni Wi-Fi around the US continues to trickle in. Today, MetroFi made an announcement that it will be discountinuing service in several of its service area. Checking availability on the website will be treated with the following message:

"It is with regret that we notify you of our intentions to discontnue offering the MetroFi FREE and MetroFi Premium services in your area. We are in the process of negotiating with your city to keep the network in place, under city ownership, and during this time your services will not be affected. As soon as we know the outcome of these negotiations, we will provide we will provide you with further information"

With no apparent buyers for its network and no infusion of additional VC funding, MetroFi will not be able to sustain operations. The prediction is the MetroFi will make an announcement to fold its operation by end of 2008.
