After Google's CEO Eric Schmidt publicly declared that he would turn down any offer to be the US's first Chief Technology Officer (which The Standard's community correctly forecast), speculation has heated up around the next obvious choice.
What about Bill Gates?
As one of the wealthiest men in the world, Bill Gates could afford to become a public servant without taking a financial hit. He also is easily considered to be one of the greatest technology leaders in generations. Putting Microsoft's anti-trust battles with the DoJ aside, Mr. Gates could weild incredible power and influence amongst a vast array of issues facing the US today.
Prediction: Will Bill Gates be named Obama’s pick for CTO? Gates will need to accept the position in order for this prediction to be judged favorably.

Michael Powell for CTO?
hmmmm.... Bill Gates suitable for a CTO!
My bet is on Julius Genachowski. From http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=10749
Genachowski went to Harvard Law School with Obama and served as an advisor to the Obama campaign on technology issues, even helping to draft Obama’s technology platform. He previously served as chief of business operations at InterActive Corp, was an FCC advisor during the Clinton administration, and founded his own company, LaunchBox Digital, to help tech startups. Since the election, Obama has named Genachowski to his transition team.
il est bon que Barack Obama remporte la victiore face son adversaire Jonh M.
Putting his investments in trust could be a problem . . .
According to WSJ, the top 3 candidates are:
Julius Genachowski
Don Gips
Charles "Chuck" E. Phillips, Jr.
Who is wiling to submit to a 7 page questionaire?
This article referenced Industry Standard post (http://dorobekinsider.com/2008/11/18/obama-cto-frenzy-more-names-in-the-...)
Nothing against Gates, but I hope he does not become the CTO. How about a more corporate neutral person to take that role. We don't need an Executive Branch sanctioned lobbyist in that role.
Get someone in there who will make the government information more accessible and digital. Not that it isn't digital today, but keep going in that direction and push it further. Not only that, but make it a two way street where they share information with us and we can send them information in online polls, etc. The government needs to have a better "finger" on America's pulse, like near real-time online polls...
I'd love to see DC CTO Vivek Kundra or Harvard Business School Associate professor Andrew McAfee..

Charles.
@TIS, will a lack of announcement by Dec 10 render an unfavorable judgment?
No - the announcement (which should be soon) will be the determining factor. We may extend the deadline if need be.
Bill Gates is not my first pick. He dropped out of college. Why? The food wasn't good enough for him?
